Absolutely Electric, Inc. - Museum of Photographic Arts - Energy Efficient Lighting Design and installation of LED Lights in Gallery

MOPA has relied on Absolutely Electric, Inc.  for more than six years now, and over that period, they’ve never let us down.  During our recent $1.3 million renovation, Mr. Nixon and his crew provided their usual outstanding service and expertise on a job that had tight deadlines and no room for error.  They have also specified and installed LED replacement products for our Theater and Gallery spaces, which all together has resulted in an increase in lighting flexibility and a decrease in power consumption. AE can always be counted on to come through on time and on budget.  My highest recommendation!

Project Overview

In a multi-phase approach over four years, Absolutely Electric Inc. has helped guide MOPA through energy efficient lighting and controls retrofits to the point where all the MOPA Theatre (with CSR Theatrical Design), Galleries, and as of 2015 (in concert with Gensler San Diego and Johnson & Jennings) the retail, entry, and new gallery spaces now offer low cost to operate sophisticated artifact viewing and event lighting sources and controls. MOPA lighting controls, designed and built by Absolutely Electric Inc., fully complied with California Title 24 2013 (implemented in 2014) Standards as early as 2011.

Project Highlights:

  • Lighting sources gentler to artifacts
  • Lighting control facilitates events
  • Lighting control facilitates exhibit cycles
  • 64,250+kWh of usage reduced annually
  • Equal to a 32kW(2,500sq ft) solar system
  • Offsets 43 metric tons of CO2 annually
  • Equal to 8 homes annual electrical use
  • Equal to 1,606 trees ability to process CO2
  • 6,400+kWh of HVAC cooling offset annually

Our museum was sorely lacking in lighting. Budget limitations prevented us from upgrading our system but Travis and his team came up with an affordable, phased in plan that allowed us the capability to get up to industry speed without breaking the bank. Absolutely Electric, Inc. has been servicing our lighting needs ever since and they have continually identified solutions to many of our issues always coming through on time and on budget. I would recommend them to anyone.

Project Overview

In 2011, Absolutely Electric Inc., in cooperation with Balboa Park Cultural Partnership and Balboa Art Conservation Center designed and built Balboa Park’s first all LED museum gallery retrofit. AE and BACC fully explored implications of what was then a new lighting source and through research and development ended up with a lighting and controls strategy that has since been shared with other museum professionals at multiple museum conferences.

Absolutely Electric, Inc. - Casa De Balboa - Energy Efficient Lighting Design and installation of LED Lights

As a high profile park and public institution, Casa De Balboa, along with Balboa Park, has created the goal to establish Balboa Park as an exemplary model of sustainability and energy efficiency for museums and parks around the globe. Absolutely Electric, Inc. has played a key role in helping Casa de Balboa shape those goals. Absolutely Electric, Inc. has worked in various capacities in the Casa de Balboa building for almost 10 years. Most recently they helped us leverage 3rd party utility funding for lighting and lighting control systems upgrades which allows the building to be less liable for maintenance and operating costs. This in turn helped us to achieve LEED Silver Status. Absolutely Electric, Inc. is consistently able to interpret specific needs and expertly provide that niche with the highest standard of professional service available.
